Rifleman, London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles)

Robert Cyril Wardell was a student at Alleyn's until 1910 and joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles). During his time with the London Regiment, Robert served overseas on the Western Front as part of the Lewis Gun Section and saw action in France and Flanders. In 1916, he took part in the second phase of the Battle of the Somme and was involved in the Battle of Ginchy as the British attempted to capture the high ground over the German third position in the line.
