Arthur L. Lovell
Rifleman, London Regiment (City of London Rifles)
Arthur L. Lovell was a student at Alleyn’s until 1906 and lived at 4 Brackley Road, Beckenham. He had two older brothers, Harold and William Lovell, who were also students Alleyn’s. After the outbreak of war in August 1914, all three siblings decided to join the war effort. After being attested, Arthur joined the London Regiment (City of London Rifles) as a Rifleman and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In 1915, he was serving in France during the Battle of the Loos, the largest British attack of the year. The battle saw the Allies attempt to break through the German defences and return to a war movement. Unfortunately, it was during this action that Arthur was killed in battle on September 25th 1915. He is buried at Loos Cemetery.
